How to play Hangman
Hangman is the classic letter-guessing game. A hidden word appears as a row of blanks, one for each letter, and you guess a letter at a time. Correct letters fill in every position where they appear; wrong letters cost you one of your limited guesses. Daily play counts toward your streak, and Practice lets you pick a category without touching it.
Make your own Hangman puzzle and share it with a link.
How to play
- Look at the blanks to see how many letters the hidden word has.
- Tap or type a letter to guess it.
- A correct letter fills in every spot it appears at once; a wrong letter costs one guess.
- A number and a row of icons both show how many guesses remain.
- Reveal the whole word before your guesses run out to win.
Tips & strategy
- Open with the common vowels — E, A, and O appear in the majority of English words.
- Follow up with the frequent consonants: R, S, T, L, and N.
- Use the pattern, not just the letters. Once you can see the shape of the word, whole families of candidates drop away.
- Watch the length: short words are often pronouns or prepositions, while long ones usually carry a familiar suffix you can guess at.
- Play Practice in a category you know well to build confidence without risking your Daily streak.
Accessibility
Remaining guesses are shown as a number as well as icons, so the warning never depends on reading a picture, and letters can be typed on a physical keyboard.
